Cheney Attempting to Constrain Bush's Choices on Iran Conflict: Staff Engaged in Insubordination Against President Bush: The Washington Note

There is a race currently underway between different flanks of the administration to determine the future course of US-Iran policy.

On one flank are the diplomats, and on the other is Vice President Cheney's team and acolytes -- who populate quite a wide swath throughout the American national security bureaucracy.

The Pentagon and the intelligence establishment are providing support to add muscle and nuance to the diplomatic effort led by Condi Rice, her deputy John Negroponte, Under Secretary of State R. Nicholas Burns, and Legal Adviser John Bellinger. The support that Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and CIA Director Michael Hayden are providing Rice's efforts are a complete, 180 degree contrast to the dysfunction that characterized relations between these institutions before the recent reshuffle of top personnel.

However, the Department of Defense and national intelligence sector are also preparing for hot conflict. They believe that they need to in order to convince Iran's various power centers that the military option does exist.

But this is worrisome. The person in the Bush administration who most wants a hot conflict with Iran is Vice President Cheney. The person in Iran who most wants a conflict is Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Quds Force would be big winners in a conflict as well -- as the political support that both have inside Iran has been flagging.

Multiple sources have reported that a senior aide on Vice President Cheney's national security team has been meeting with policy hands of the American Enterprise Institute, one other think tank, and more than one national security consulting house and explicitly stating that Vice President Cheney does not support President Bush's tack towards Condoleezza Rice's diplomatic efforts and fears that the President is taking diplomacy with Iran too seriously.

This White House official has stated to several Washington insiders that Cheney is planning to deploy an "end run strategy" around the President if he and his team lose the policy argument.

The thinking on Cheney's team is to collude with Israel, nudging Israel at some key moment in the ongoing standoff between Iran's nuclear activities and international frustration over this to mount a small-scale conventional strike against Natanz using cruise missiles (i.e., not ballistic missiles). ...Read More

Cindy Sheehan Says Good Bye to the Peace Movement - An Emotional Farewell

By Cindy Sheehan

I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called “Face” of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such “liberal blogs” as the Democratic Underground. Being called an “attention whore” and being told “good riddance” are some of the more milder rebukes.

I have come to some heartbreaking conclusions this Memorial Day Morning. These are not spur of the moment reflections, but things I have been meditating on for about a year now. The conclusions that I have slowly and very reluctantly come to are very heartbreaking to me.

The first conclusion is that I was the darling of the so-called left as long as I limited my protests to George Bush and the Republican Party. Of course, I was slandered and libeled by the right as a “tool” of the Democratic Party. This label was to marginalize me and my message. How could a woman have an original thought, or be working outside of our “two-party” system? ...Read More

Senator Bingaman Cites Public Outcry as Best Chance to Prevent War with Iran and End the Occupation
At the recent Joint Session of the New Mexico Legislature, US Senator Jeff Bingaman spoke on education, healthcare and global warming. After his address, Mother Media caught up with him in the hall. We gave him several documents regarding the Impeachment Resolution and the threat of a wider regional conflict. We then asked his opinion on the best way to prevent war with Iran. He did not offer a legislative solution, but instead said, "I think the public outcry is having a real effect on the discussion in Washington." So turn up the volume, my friends.

DOE Plans Next Generation of Nuclear Weapons - CCNS

Plutonium Manufacturing and the Quest for Nuclear Credibility
"Pit aging (and warhead aging overall) is not the reason NNSA wants to restart nuclear-warhead production workforce aging is. To keep the nuclear enterprise going, nuclear skills, knowledge, values and culture must be transmitted to a new generation. Through new designs and new manufacturing, NNSA and its allies seek to renew the labs and manufacturing plants in every way possible."

Senate Race Economic Policy Discussion: Free Money? Why Not.

One of the advantages of running for office is that it requires that you think long and hard about public policy. Since the citizenry has been discouraged from doing anything other than choosing between one compromise and another every two years, creative political philosophy has become the realm of corporate controlled academia and too often obscure scholarship.

No field of politics has been victimized more by this tragic course of events than economic policy, which the pyramid priest bankers have sought to obscure and protect as their own personal fiefdom, rather than acknowledge as the property of the sovereign people. Cleverly presenting us with a false choice between fascism and communism, the bankers - controlling both ideologies and their wind-up tin soldiers in the halls of power - have crushed the people in between and reduced them to globalization's slaves. There is another way, it just requires that we understand and speak up for our rights, and in particular our right to ownership of the magical, symbolic, societal circulatory system known as money.

The prime purpose of money is as a means of trade and store of value. As such, it requires nothing more than the faith of the people that it will be accepted wherever they wish to spend it. Furthermore, it is well recognized that the issuance of legal tender has often been reserved to the sovereign of the nation. Since it requires the faith or at least obedience of the people, money creation is the supreme prerogative of the sovereign. It has recently dawned upon me that I can't find a good reason why United States legal tender currency should not be distributed freely to the people. The argument that it should be freely distributed is biological, and models economic policy after the circulatory system. Society is all one organism, and no part of it is healthy when any one part is not. In such a model, the government is the heart, and the people are the cells, the final destinations of the oxygen and nutrients carried in the blood. The veins, represented by taxes return the money back to the heart and the cycle begins again. The US budget is about 2.5 trillion dollars. There are approximately 150 million adults in the US. You could give every adult citizen ten thousand dollars a year and still have a trillion dollars left over for other government spending. If you were to appropriately tax bank, corporate and billionaire investment holdings you might be able to get an additional ten thousand a year for your friends and neighbors away from the Hoarders in Chief. Why is it that only war profiteers and corporate raiders get big handouts? What's wrong with supporting the citizenry?

The current government's punitive and elitist economic policy restricts blood flow to the cells and increasingly ages America with economic arthritis, cancer and heart disease. Government policy could instead mirror the loving generosity of nature: the freely shining Sun and the ever-nourishing, all-loving Earth.

Money like language is also an abstraction of meaning, and a transmitter of cultural values. Although there are some good arguments for its abolition, there are also good arguments for celebrating it as one of the defining creative attributes of the human being. In paper and on coin, money is a kind of circulating magic spell, a ritual of cultural self-definition. As our culture has progressed, our money and its symbols need to as well. It's time to put the faces of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Mother Jones, Cesar Chavez, Crazy Horse, Black Elk, Lame Deer, Jody Williams and other heroes on our money, not just those of the historic patriarchal dominance culture, well-meaning as some of them were.

Furthermore, the symbols of the eagle, the pyramid and other historically exploitative symbols should be removed from our money. The eagle, symbol of military might, dominance and high-flying, death-dealing predation is not an appropriate symbol for a balanced and loving civilization. There is a place for the eagle, but not in a position of dominance. There is no need to model human human behavior after any animal, and we would be better suited with a heart and circle or any other pure symbolic abstractions of love and life. The pyramid, symbol of concentrated power and wealth in a small handful of people, is diametrically opposed to the stated goals of the United States. That it should ever have been placed on our money is indicative of just how bad things are. It's time for change. I'm interested in your ideas, please send me your thoughts.
